Salvia spathacea, or more familiarly and descriptive, the Hummingbird Sage! It resides just outside our front door here in southern California where we marvel at its beauty, delicate fruit scent, and its ability to attract hummingbirds to the delicate feast inside the pink flowers. Bees and butterflies also love this plant. The Hummingbird Sage is a herbaceous plant with a woody base that likes to spread out a bit. The flowers appear on upright stalks from a base of lovely green leaves. It does well in the partly sunny/partly shady corner of the sage garden, right next to the white sage. The plant is an evergreen, clumping perennial with a rhizome root system. It is very drought tolerant and can usually make it through the summer without any supplementary water after the first year. Occasional watering will help the plant avoid going "semi-deciduous. If you want Hummingbird Sage green year round, it'll tolerate once or twice a month summer watering. It'll grow 1 - 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The flowers bloom all year and most especially in winter, spring, and summer.

The Hummingbird Sage is very easy to take care of and will tolerate temperatures down to 0 degrees F. Deadheading the flowers or lightly pruning in the summer will keep it tidy looking but is not necessary.
