Tropical Milkweed - 50 Seeds

$5.00
Milkweed and monarch butterflies go together like salt and pepper! My family, our wonderful volunteers in our Up on the Farm program, all visitors get so excited at the sight of the beautiful, lucky monarchs gently floating about the garden and landing on the equally beautiful milkweed flowers! The butterflies seek out the milkweed plant to eat the lovely and essential (essential and lovely to the monarch) nectar and to lay their eggs. The monarch butterflies somehow know their babies, larva, will love eating and safely growing on the plant! The milkweed eating monarch baby is safe from getting gobbled up by birds and other animals because of the milkweed's distasteful toxic chemical that predators dislike but monarchs are not adversely affected by. As a matter of fact the chemical (cardiac glycoside) stays in the monarch butterfly protecting it throughout its life!

From Garden Gate website, Jennifer Howell: "Milkweed seeds need to be stratified to help them germinate. Stratification is when a seed is moistened, chilled or frozen and thawed, breaking down germination inhibitors on the seed coats. Milkweed seed planted in fall is naturally stratified during the cold winter. In warmer climates where winters are mild, milkweed seeds need to be chilled in the refrigerator; this replicates the natural process of snow and cold breaking down the seed casing. No matter when you plant milkweed, be sure to choose a sunny location. Sprinkle seeds on well-tilled soil and pat them down, add a top dressing of soil, and water them in.
